Today the European skies witnessed intense aerial surveillance activity conducted by NATO forces, with multiple aircraft engaged in strategic reconnaissance and monitoring missions. Here’s a detailed overview of the key aircraft involved:

1. Northrop Grumman RQ-4B Global Hawk (Reg. 10-2045 – c/s FORTE11)

This high-altitude drone operated by the US Air Force took off from Sigonella Air Base in Sicily for a surveillance mission. The Global Hawk is known for its capability to monitor large areas using synthetic aperture radar and electro-optical/infrared sensors.

2. Boeing RC-135W Rivet Joint (Reg. ZZ665 – c/s RRR7207)

Operated by the Royal Air Force, this aircraft is specialized in signals intelligence (SIGINT) collection. On October 24, 2024, an RC-135W completed a historic mission, flying along NATO’s entire eastern flank from Greece to Finland, underlining the UK’s strong commitment to alliance security.

3. Boeing E-3A Sentry (Reg. LX-N90442 – c/s NATO004)

This NATO-operated AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) aircraft was deployed for aerial surveillance missions, providing early warning and tactical coordination for allied forces. On February 24, 2025, two E-3As operated out of Romania to monitor western Ukraine and the Black Sea, showcasing NATO’s responsiveness to regional tensions.

4. Boeing P-8A Poseidon (Reg. not available – c/s P8)

This maritime patrol aircraft operated by the US Navy was observed conducting surveillance over the Baltic Sea, focusing on naval activities in the region.

5. Bombardier Challenger 650 ARTEMIS (Reg. not available – c/s CL60)

Used by the US Army, this aircraft is employed in electronic surveillance missions, monitoring communications and radar activity in areas of interest.

6. Beechcraft King Air 350ER (Reg. F-RACG – c/s FAF9213)

Operated by the French Air Force, this light ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance) aircraft was conducting missions over Romanian airspace.

These operations highlight the importance of coordinated aerial surveillance among NATO allies to ensure security and stability across the Euro-Atlantic region.
