On Friday afternoon, the Russian Navy spy ship Kildin left the Mediterranean. This is significant news because the Kildin had been sailing in the Mediterranean for over a year and a half (possibly even longer), causing concern among NATO countries in the region — even more so than the Russian warships.

The Kildin‘s mission is to gather intelligence and data (despite its official designation as a “scientific research vessel”). Over the past months, it roamed various parts of the Mediterranean — notably sparking a wave of surveillance missions in early January — before suffering a major malfunction off the coast of Syria in late January (including a fire on board), after which it had to head back home.
As a result, the Russian presence in the Mediterranean has been further reduced, now consisting of only one submarine and two frigates.
