Yesterday (though the same could be said for previous days), we observed intense activity of NATO countries’ Boeing P-8A Poseidon aircraft across Europe, from the Arctic Ocean to the Mediterranean.
While the primary role of the P-8A is anti-submarine patrol, the aircraft is capable of performing many other missions, particularly SIGINT operations.
One such mission was carried out by an RNAF Boeing P-8A (reg. 9586), which took off from Narvik, Norway. The aircraft orbited near the Russian border before heading to the Arctic Ocean, where it loitered off the Russian naval bases in the Murmansk area.
Similarly, the two USN Poseidons operating in the Mediterranean conducted SIGINT activities—one in the Black Sea theater and the other in the eastern Mediterranean, off the coast of Syria.
A RAF Poseidon (reg. ZP803), on the other hand, carried out both SIGINT and maritime patrol operations over the Baltic Sea.
Meanwhile, a USN P-8A mission over the North Sea, west of Norway, appeared to be focused on maritime patrol.
