This morning, we recorded intense aerial surveillance activity over Romania, Bulgaria, and the Black Sea, involving multiple military aircraft from various NATO countries. This activity takes place in a delicate geopolitical context, with the ongoing conflict in Ukraine continuing to impact regional security.
We identified several reconnaissance and surveillance aircraft from different nations:
- Boeing E-3A (NATO, reg. LX-N90453): An AWACS aircraft used for advanced aerial control and surveillance, which orbited over eastern Romania.
- Bombardier 650 ARTEMIS (US Army, reg. N488CR): An electronic intelligence aircraft used to monitor communications and other activities in the operational theater, particularly focusing on the border area between Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine.
- Dassault Mirage 2000D (French Air Force, reg. 626): An aircraft that most likely conducted a SIGINT mission using ASTAC pods, carried under the fuselage, which provide electronic intelligence (ELINT) and tactical reconnaissance capabilities. The mission was again carried out over the central Black Sea.
- Beech B350 ALSR (French Air Force, reg. F-RACG): A light surveillance aircraft useful for gathering strategic information, which has been deployed for surveillance missions in northeastern Romania for several days.
- Gulfstream E.550 CAEW (Italian Air Force, reg. MM62293): An early warning aircraft essential for coordinating air operations and intelligence gathering, which took off from Pratica di Mare AB.
This intensified aerial operation highlights the key role of surveillance in NATO’s strategy. Continuous monitoring of Eastern European airspace enables rapid intervention in case of escalation and contributes to the security of allied nations.
At a time of heightened international tensions, the constant presence of these aircraft serves both as a deterrent and as a means of gathering intelligence, which can be shared with Ukrainian armed forces.
