An American Airlines Boeing 787-9 (reg. N840AN – f/n AAL292), flying from New York to Delhi, changed course and turned back west over the Caspian Sea early in the afternoon due to a bomb threat.

The aircraft requested an emergency landing at Rome Fiumicino Airport, likely after determining that there was no immediate need for an urgent landing.
The aircraft entered Italian airspace at around 16:20 CET, where it was intercepted by a pair of Italian Air Force Eurofighter F-2000 (likely scrambled from Grosseto AB) that escorted it to Rome Fiumicino Airport.

The scramble order for a rapid takeoff was issued by the CAOC (Combined Air Operations Centre) in Torrejón, Spain—the NATO authority responsible for the area—in coordination with the Aerospace Operations Command (COA) in Poggio Renatico (FE).
The “fighter controller” personnel from the 22nd D.A.M.I. Group in Licola (NA) provided the two F-2000 pilots with the necessary coordinates and information to locate the civilian aircraft, carry out identification procedures, and assess any emergency conditions.
The Boeing 787 landed safely at Rome Fiumicino at 17:01 without any issues
