Today, commemorations were held to mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz extermination camp, where over 1.1 million Jews were killed by the Nazis.
More than 80 heads of state and government attended the ceremonies.

The security of the attendees was also ensured from the sky, where, in addition to the regular NATO apparatus that has been securing the Alliance’s eastern flank for nearly three years (fighters performing CAP missions), specific assets were deployed.
A NATO Boeing E-3A (reg. LX-N90445, call sign MAGIC02) orbited the area and was refueled by a USAF Boeing KC-135R (reg. 62-3511, call sign ESSO75). The airspace was also monitored by a Polish Air Force Saab 340 AEW&C (reg. 3401), which patrolled the border with Belarus.
