Here we go again: a new mission involving a USN Boeing P-8A near Sicily. This morning, a USN Poseidon took off from Souda Bay AB and is conducting a series of low-altitude orbits (around 700 feet, less than 250 meters) off the coast of western Sicily, in the Sicilian Channel.

This mission is part of a series of similar operations carried out by American and Italian aircraft in the Tyrrhenian Sea over the past week.

While the exact purpose of these missions remains unclear, as we have speculated before, they might be aimed at monitoring the movements of “suspicious” naval assets. The primary suspect is the Russian spy ship “Yantar,” currently located in the western Mediterranean.
