The Italian Parliament yesterday passed the bill ratifying the establishment of the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP). This initiative, signed on December 14, 2023, in Tokyo, marks a crucial step for international collaboration in air defense, bringing together Italy, the United Kingdom, and Japan to create a sixth-generation platform aimed at advancing military aviation toward new technological frontiers.

With 215 votes in favor and 43 against (including opposition from the Five Star Movement and the Green and Left Alliance), the Chamber of Deputies has authorized the creation of GCAP, an international organization headquartered in Reading, United Kingdom. Endowed with legal status, the organization will be responsible for designing and developing a cutting-edge aerial system, with the possibility of including other countries interested in contributing to this strategic project.

GCAP aims to create an integrated ecosystem of combat aircraft equipped with advanced technologies, enabling them to operate alongside drones, satellites, and other military assets. Through an intelligent network based on cloud architecture, artificial intelligence, and next-generation data links, these aircraft will be able to communicate and share data in real time, making them highly versatile and adaptable to the changing needs of the modern battlefield.

Italy plans to deploy these new aircraft starting in 2035, progressively replacing its current Eurofighter fleet. The operational lifespan of this new platform could extend to the end of the century, paving the way for continuous technological evolution and strengthening national defense capabilities.

Several Italian companies, leaders in the defense sector, are already involved in the GCAP project. Notable among these are Leonardo, Mbda Italia, Elettronica, and Avio Ge, all ready to contribute their expertise in aerospace engineering, communication technologies, and artificial intelligence. Alongside these major industry players, a network of small and medium-sized Italian enterprises will also have a significant role, boosting the national industrial fabric and generating positive economic impacts for the sector.

The approval of the ratification for participation in GCAP marks an important step for Italy, positioning it among the leaders in developing future military technologies. This project, born from collaboration with the United Kingdom and Japan, aims to build a defense system capable of adapting to emerging challenges and integrating the most advanced technological solutions available.
