On September 5, 2023, an Italian Air Force Gulfstream E.550 CAEW (registration MM62293) arrived at Siauliai Air Base in Lithuania, where it joined Italian Eurofighter Typhoons from the Task Force Air 4th Wing Baltic Horse III that are participating in a NATO Baltic Air Policing mission.

The E.550 CAEW is a highly capable airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft that is equipped with a variety of sensors, including a multi-mode radar, electronic intelligence (ELINT) systems, and communications intercept systems. These sensors allow the aircraft to detect and track air and maritime targets over a wide area.

Since its arrival in Lithuania, the E.550 CAEW has flown five missions, with an average duration of six hours. The aircraft has flown over Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, and Poland.

The addition of the E.550 CAEW to the NATO Baltic Air Policing mission strengthens the alliance’s ability to deter and defend against any potential threats to the airspace of the Baltic states.
